Please make arrangements to pick up your new pet at the shelter following the approval of your adoption.

While we have new animals arriving daily with no prior health history, we do our best to ensure that the pets we adopt are healthy. We do NOT have a veterinarian on staff.

Make an appointment with your veterinarian for your new pet!
We strongly recommend you take your new pet to your veterinarian for an evaluation as soon as possible. If a condition should develop which requires veterinarian intervention, you need to discuss with your vet the options, possible fees involved, if he/she has a payment plan, etc. Again, if you are not in a position to accept these expenses or pay for necessary treatment, please do not adopt an animal.
The Wayne County Humane Society does not assume any veterinarian expenses incurred.

Congratulations on the new member of your household!
The Humane Society wishes you well with your new pet. However, we need to make you aware of the viruses that occasionally run through any kennel.

Most Canine and Feline viruses have an incubation period of 7 to 14 days. Due to the high turnover in dogs and cats, it is impossible to protect each animal from exposure. Even though we try to place only healthy pets for adoption, sometimes the symptoms of a disease will not become evident until after the pet has been taken home. Please remember that The Wayne County Humane Society does NOT have a Veterinarian on site and does not have the funding to provide every pet with a veterinary medical check-up. Therefore, the Wayne County Humane Society has gathered a list of some important vet care needed for your pet within the first year of pet ownership.

Some of the care described below may have already been included with the cost of your adoption. Much of what is listed will be expenses incurred within the first three months of acquiring a new pet. Please make sure that you are in the financial position to provide the necessary care and treatment of your new pet.

If your new pet should begin to show any symptoms such as poor appetite, sluggishness, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY! Some viruses can be fatal to your pet within hours. These preventative measures will help your pet live a longer, healthier, happier life!

Good Luck, and THANK YOU for choosing a pet from the Wayne County Humane Society!
