Thank you for your interest to volunteer your time! The backbone of our agency is our volunteer force. To be successful, we need your help. Whether you can volunteer your time and efforts within the animal shelter or you are able to help outside the shelter, your skills and enthusiasm are essential to reach our goals. Our volunteers allow for the continued operation and growth of the Wayne County Humane Society’s many programs and services.
With the Animals:
Most volunteers choose to volunteer at the shelter directly with the animals doing things such as:
• Socializing cats
• Walking dogs
• Feeding animals (with staff permission)
• Grooming animals (with staff permission)
• Filling water bowls
• Giving treats
• Cleaning cages
Clerical Work:
Spot checks by staff members are required as they are ultimately responsible for any mistakes.
• Check voicemail messages and/or return phone calls
• Update the volunteer database for the shelter
• Filing
• Photocopy forms and ensure there is sufficient paperwork in the front office
• Make veterinarian appointments
• Create posters, signs, and other publications or correspondence
• Take photos of animals (check-in with K9/Feline Techs first)
Maintenance Work:
• Laundry
• Cleaning cages (need permission before entering any ‘staff only’ areas)
• Washing dishes
• Cleaning toys and distributing them to the animals
• Cleaning litter pans
• Putting pop cans into the recycling container outside
• Sweeping leaves / shoveling snow
• Cleaning crates, laundry baskets, and carriers
Other Activities:
• Help at special events
• Transport animals to rescue organizations
• Transport animals to veterinarian appointments
